One of my favourite things about being a family photographer is watching families grow. It is so special when past clients ask me to document their growing families. Back in October, I took family photos for Tyler and Louisa. During this session, Louisa excitedly shared that she was pregnant. Having just had my second baby a few weeks before, I was so excited to take newborn photos for this growing Calgary family.

The transition from a family of three to a family of four is a wild ride. With my first, taking care of a new baby was overwhelming. I worried about his sleeping, eating, weight and if I was doing a good job. With my second baby, Eloise, all that baby stuff was simple. I felt capable and prepared to take care of an infant.

This time, I’m struggling to balance the needs of a toddler with the needs of a newborn baby. It’s so hard. Nine months in, I’m just starting to figure things out. It’s been hard. I feel like I have very little spare time to devote to myself and my marriage. My house is a mess. I struggle to be a good mom, run a business and take care of myself.

When life is overwhelming, I focus on the beauty and joy that comes with being a family of four. I Watch my toddler lovingly kiss his baby sister on the forehead. Luca gently strokes her chubby little cheek like a grown-up and says, “I love you Ellie Bean,” in his sweet little toddler voice. As Ellie gets older, it is obvious that Luca is her favourite person in the entire world. These days, she crawls along on the floor behind him and beams when he looks in her direction. When I see these two together, the growing pains of the past few months melt away.

Congratulations Tyler and Louisa! The transition is tough, but so worth it! Leave Tyler and Louisa some love! If they get 25 comments on this blog post, they will receive a complimentary 8×10″ print of their favourite photo from their newborn session.
