Over the years, I’ve found that many moms get overwhelmed and even a little stressed about selecting outfits for family photos. Considering this, it is no surprise that what to wear for family photos is one one of the top questions asked by my clients. Today I’m covering six tips on what to wear for family photos.

Tip #1: Stick to a Neutral or Soft Colour Palette

When Choosing clothes for you your portrait session, it is best to stick with a neutral or pastel color palette. My favourite colors to photograph are cream, gray, blush, baby blue, oatmeal, lavender and navy. Darker colors that are muted in their brightness also photograph beautifully. Think dark emerald or merlot.

Tip #2 Avoid Logos and Large Graphics

There should be no logos or writing on your clothing because they are distracting in photographs. Any chosen prints should be minimal and soft.

Tip #3: Add Layers and Accessories

When choosing what to wear for family photos, select solid colors that layer together with details in the fabrics and textures. Think of the textures you see in linen, chunky knits and lace. If you choose white or black, be sure there is texture in the fabric as this helps preserve details in the photos. Adding shawls, scarves, cardigans and jewelry also helps pull a look together and makes you appear extra polished. Adding these final accessories is crucial for coordinating a family’s outfits and making sure no one looks too “matchy matchy”.

Tip #4: Plan Around Mom

When choosing what to wear for family photos, I usually recommend that you start planning around mom. Mom should select an outfit she absolutely loves. Her clothes should make her feel confident, comfortable and beautiful. Once mom decides on her outfit, everyone else can select clothes that coordinate.

Tip #5: Ask Me For Advice!

I am always happy to make suggestions for my clients. You can always send me a text with photos of your outfits and I’ll give you honest feedback. Don’t be shy! I love this part of the process!

Tip #6: Take off Your Socks and Shoes

Have everyone take off their shoes and socks for family photos. Bare feet are less distracting than socks and make people look at ease in their home.
